My uncle used to work in a company that handles asbestos. It was not surprising when we found out years later that he was suffering from mesothelioma. This is a rare type of cancer that affects people who are exposed to asbestos. As asbestos is inhaled, cancer cells start to form in the mesothelium, the lining of our internal organs. There are four types of mesothelioma. These are pleural mesothelioma (lungs), peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen), pericardial mesothelioma (heart) and testicular mesothelioma (testicles). The most common type, which my uncle has, is pleural mesothelioma. The symptoms are chest wall pain, pleural effusion or fluid surrounding the lungs, shortness of breath, fatigue or anemia, wheezing, hoarseness of voice, cough and blood in the sputum or cough. Not all these symptoms were experienced by my uncle, but he had most of them. At first, he thought it was pneumonia. But when it got worse, he got alarmed. He suspected it was cancer caused by his job, so he went to an oncologist and there he was diagnosed with mesothelioma. I told my uncle to ask for compensation from his company. He went to their office to talk to his former employer but they refused to give him any money. I advised him to hire a lawyer instead. He said he had no money but the Mesothelioma Lawyer insisted that he would not charge him a dime unless they have won the case. With this, my uncle agreed and they won. He received his compensation.
